Background: Patricia (Trish) Dixon's 23 years of community service clearly represents her diverse interests, concerns, capabilities and accomplishments. She began with volunteer work as a teacher's aide when her oldest child began school at Sinnott Elementary, then spent years as a parent volunteer with Bobby Sox and Little League. From there she continually expanded her scope of community involvement.
In the mid-1980's Mrs. Dixon became a founding member of the Parktown Citizens' Committee that monitored the development of Shapell's Hillcrest housing project.
In 1986 she helped establish a committee to determine the level of community interest in having a Nob Hill Foods supermarket in Milpitas again. Toward this end she co-chaired Measure A, a city-wide ballot measure that settled the rezoning issue allowing the development of Nob Hill and a neighborhood shopping center on Jacklin Road.
In 1989 she was appointed to the Hillside Ordinance Review Committee that the Council formed. Over an increase in hillside development convinced the Milpitas City Council to form a blue ribbon committee to review the current hillside policy. She served on this Committee from 1989 through 1991.
In 1991 Mrs. Dixon was appointed to the Milpitas Planning Commission. During her six years on the Commission she served as both the Vice Chair (2 years) and the Chair (2 1/2 years). During her tenure Mrs. Dixon co-crafted the updated hillside ordinance, reducing hillside density from 1 house per acre to 1 house per 10-80 acres.
In 1996, acting upon Mrs. Dixon's recommendation, the City of Milpitas left the SCC joint agency to form its own housing and community development agency. The City now uses these funds for neighborhood services and to provide affordable housing. From 1989 to 1996 Mrs. Dixon served as Milpitas' citizen representative to the Santa Clara County Housing and Community Development Advisory Board. During 1993 to 1996 she was elected as the Vice Chair and then the Chair.
Her concern for education led to her co-founding of the Milpitas Foundation for Education. In 1994, Trish chaired the non-profit benefit gala for the grand opening of the Great Mall of the Bay Area. Thus far, this Foundation has raised over $250,000 for Milpitas school projects and programs. In 1996 her interest in education led to her chairing the campaign to raise funds for rehabilitating the City's 30-year-old, deteriorating, schools. This successful campaign has raised $65 million plus State matching funds for a total of nearly 100 million in construction improvements for Milpitas schools. Mrs. Dixon was appointed by the Milpitas Unified School District school board to the Bond Oversight Committee to oversee the spending of the bond funds. 1996-2003
1996 Trish Dixon left the Milpitas Planning Commission after her successful election as the 4th woman ever to attain a council seat. Year 2000, Milpitas voters re-elected Mrs. Dixon to a second term on the Milpitas City Council. In 2002, Mrs. Dixon's colleagues elected her to take on the post as Vice Mayor. Trish is the second woman in Milpitas' 50 years history to hold this position.
In 1997 SCC Supervisor Pete McHugh appointed Mrs. Dixon along with San Jose Councilwomen Charlotte Powers to represent SCC as founding members to the Inter-regional Partnership. Through this working association, five counties have been formulating solutions to the jobs-housing and traffic problems of this region.
Mrs. Dixon's dedication to community service was acknowledged by the California Association of School Administrators that named her "Volunteer of the Year." In 1996 she was named Milpitas' "Citizen of the Year." Trish Dixon was recently honored along with San Jose Councilmember Pat Dando, and Assemblymember Elaine Alquist as "Women of Achievement" for elected women officials. Trish's community service has been recognized by the Milpitas Executive Lions Club, the California State Assembly, California State Senate and the United States Congress. Locally, Trish Dixon has been selected by readers of the Milpitas Post as one of the best elected officials for 2001, 2002, and 2003.
